Insurance Help

How to Apply for Medicaid in Georgia

Medicaid provides free or low-cost health coverage. Here’s how the process works. Chat for Change volunteers can help you apply at our monthly events.

Check if you qualify

In Georgia, Medicaid covers children, pregnant women, people with disabilities, and low-income adults in some categories. Income limits vary. Use the Georgia Gateway portal to check your eligibility.

Gather your documents

You will need: a photo ID (driver's license or state ID), proof of address, Social Security Number or immigration documents, proof of income (pay stubs, tax forms, or a letter from your employer), and proof of Georgia residency.

Apply online or in person

Apply online at gateway.ga.gov, call 1-877-423-4746, or visit your local DFCS office. Chat for Change volunteers can help you with the application process at our monthly events.

After you apply

You will receive a letter within 45 days. If approved, your Medicaid card will arrive by mail. If denied, you have the right to appeal. Contact us if you need help understanding a denial letter.
